TAUNTON - Three out of four quarters weren't bad.
But the second quarter was not to the liking of the Bishop Feehan High School boys' basketball team Friday night, as they were outscored 20-5 in the last eight minutes of the first half and lost at Coyle-Cassidy, 65-50.
"They're long and lean and very athletic," said Feehan coach Matt Freeman, whose Shamrocks led 12-11 at the first stop and were still able to hang close enough to pull back within eight points in the fourth quarter before falling off the pace.
Coyle ran off the last six points of the first quarter and the first five of the second to gain the advantage for the rest of the night. Kelvin Kariuki scored 18 points to lead three Warriors in double figures.
Michael Perry netted 18 points and Peter Luongo 16 to pace the Shamrocks.
"The kids are working hard and we're going to stick with it," said Freeman, whose charges fell to 3-7 overall, 1-2 in the Eastern Athletic Conference. The Shamrocks are off until Jan. 29 when they host Westwood in a non-league game.
Dighton-Rehoboth 59, Fairhaven 41
REHOBOTH - Junior guard Chad Mello scored 12 of his 20 points during the first quarter in guiding the Falcons to victory in the South Coast Conference game.
The Falcons' man-to-man defense was the difference as the Blue Devils were limited to three points over the first eight minutes.
The Falcons (4-7, 3-6 in the SCC) owned a 10-point lead at halftime and extended it to 16 during the third quarter, never allowing the margin to shrink to less than eight.
Arthur Correira added 13 points and Elijah Brewster 11 for the Falcons, which has a 3 p.m. game at home Sunday against Somerset Berkley.
Old Rochester 71, Seekonk 62
MATTAPOISETT - Matt Heaney and Dawson Brosnahan combined for 24 points, but the Warriors fell at the finish of the South Coast Conference game.
Brosnahan scored 14 points to keep Seekonk within range of the Bulldogs, then Heaney scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers to pull the Warriors within range of ORR. Nate Pickett added nine points for Seekonk, with five of them coming in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors (4-5) trailed by eight points at halftime, but never could reduce the gap to a two possession game during the second half. ORR had a 20-8 scoring advantage at the free throw line. Seekonk next travels to Fairhaven on Friday.
MEDWAY - Liam Regan scored seven of his 15 points during a 20-point second quarter surge in leading Medway into the lead and eventually to victory in the Tri-Valley League clash.
In a foul-marred contest, Medway went to the free throw line 28 times and Norton 17, the Mustangs going to the free throw line 10 times in the turn-around second quarter.
Sophomore Griffin McAlear paced the Lancers with 12 points and Jared Sicard added 10. Norton (2-9) next visits Medfield Tuesday.
Bristol-Plymouth 70, Tri-County 41
TAUNTON - Bristol-Plymouth guard Justin Gedry poured in a game-high 30 points, scoring 16 points in the first half and 14 points in the second half to lead the Craftsmen to the Mayflower League School Division win over the Cougars.
Tri-County, which trailed 39-25, at halftime, committed a season-high 20 turnovers after averaging 10 turnovers.a game this season. The Cougars (3-4, 0-2) were also outrebounded 45-27 with Tyler Clemente collecting a team-high 10 rebounds to go with a team-high 19 points.
Tri-County (3-4, 0-2) returns to the court at Old Colony on Monday.
